Van Horn City Council members met Tuesday evening with the main focus on four city-owned blocks near the hospital. Van Horn Economic Development Corporation executive director Jeff McCoy told council members that there is increasing interest from builders who want to construct homes and duplexes here. In fact, McCoy went on to note that he has been approached by a developer out of El Paso who wants to construct homes here and the developer specializes in assisting home buyers with financing as well. McCoy went on to state that the potential developers include locals as well as the one from

If you are a baseball fan and simply love the game, then last weekend and this coming weekend offered or will offer just what you want!
Last weekend, Van Horn’s Clark Field played host to two playoff tournaments. In the first event, the Presidio Blue Devils played the Anthony Wildcats in a Class 3A bi-district 2 out of 3 tournament. In that tournament, played here over two days, Presidio prevailed and advanced to the next round.
The other 2 out of 3 tournament played here last weekend saw the Monahans Lobos take on the Fabens Wildcats in another Class 3A bi-district contest. In that tournament, Monahans prevailed over the Wildcats and advances to the area round in the playoffs.
Tonight, Clark Field will host an Area playoff game between the Clint Lions and Levelland. Game time has been set for 7:30 p.m. These two teams will play their 2nd and, if needed, 3rd games in Odessa on Friday.
Then tomorrow evening (Friday), El Paso Burgess will play Lubbock Estacado here in a Class 4A Area tournament with game time set for 5 p.m. These two teams will play their 2nd and, if needed, 3rd games on Saturday with game time set for 11 a.m.
Make plans, now, to come out to the ball park and watch these area playoff contests right here in Van Horn.
Commissioners appoint Dr. Thomas as County Health Officer
Culberson County Commissioners, meeting in special session Monday morning, appointed Dr. John Thomas to be the County Health Officer.
The appointment came upon the recommendation of County Judge Manuel Molinar who told the court that in almost every emergency situation that may arise within the county, a County Health Officer would be called for.
Commissioners made the appointment, effective immediately, however, they opted to table action on the proposed salary for a later meeting. Judge Molinar had proposed a salary of $400 a month, but the funds are not set up in the budget. Commissioners are expected to act on the salary option at next Monday’s meeting.
Becky Brewster, grant administrator, appeared before commissioners as they held a public hearing on a proposal to add an additional sum of money to the Youth Activities Center grant.
Brewster reported that there was additional money left and so the county was to get an added $55,000 to assist with the grant project, which will build the gymnasium facility to the Youth Activities Center.
After holding the hearing, commissioners adopted a resolution to accept the added money as an amendment to the grant project.
And, while they were holding hearings, commissioners also held a hearing on a proposal to submit another grant application through the Texas Community Development Program. The grant application will be due sometime in September.
Following a behind-closed-doors session to discuss personnel matters, commissioners reconvened in open session and announced that they were tabling the sheriff’s personnel item and personal use of county vehicles until a later meeting.
Commissioners, under county projects, discussed purchasing an ice machine since the county is presently buying ice. It might be more cost effective for the county to purchase an ice machine.
And, County Judge Manuel Molinar reported that the outside audit report for the fiscal year ended in September, 30, 2007 was being delayed as the result of changes in the El Paso audit firm.
Judge Molinar also reported that the county had received a new Emergency Management vehicle, which was paid for through grant funding. He noted that the vehicle will be used only for emergency management functions and that decals have been ordered for the new Ford Expedition.
Before adjourning the session, commissioners talked about the need to replace an air conditioning unit at the Mental Health Mental Retardation building and replacing some sewer lines at the restrooms at the City-County Park.
