VHHS Calculator team headed to state
By Maribel Lopez

On May 7th, the VHHS UIL calculator team will be competing in Austin at the state calculator competition. The team has been working extremely hard throughout the year, and their dedication got them far.
The team is sponsored by Mr. B.O. Buchhorn, who has been a UIL sponsor for 44 years, and has sponsored calculator for 33 years here at Van Horn High. He started teaching in 1966 in Grandfalls, Texas. He has also taught at Fulton High School in Rockport, Texas and at Fort Stockton High School.
Mr. Buchhorn got his degree at Sul Ross State University, and is certified in provisional biology and chemistry. His wife, Mrs. Buchhorn who is a junior high science teacher, is also certified in biology and geology.
“I am very proud of them, and am so happy to have overcome all the obstacles to get to this point. We hope to overcome more at state. My kids are a great bunch and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I would like to thank Mr. McBirnie for taking them to Llevelland and giving his expertise,” he stated.
The last time Van Horn went to State was in 2002, when assistant sponsor, Michael McBirnie went to state by himself as a senior. He also competed with his team in 2001.
As a former calculator team member, he mentioned, “I am very proud of them”.
The team is made up of seniors; Julio Baeza, Rutesh Bhakta, and Rebecca Mendias, junior; Ram Patel, and sophomore; Jackie Grado.
When asked how they felt about their accomplishment, Julio Baeza replied “We’ve been working hard for two years, and I feel we deserve it. “All our hard work finally paid off!,” Jackie Grado added. “After losing at regionals, we worked even harder and were determined that nothing would get in our way.” Rutesh Bhakta said.
We all wish the team members good luck at State and hope they do well in their competition, bringing home state medals!
