- This year’s One Act Play for Van Horn High School, “Persephone,” was performed at the Western Zone Competition in McCamey on March 25, 2010. The cast and crew this year were much larger than in the recent past, and the performance was almost flawless. At the competition, two schools advance to the next competition, and there is also an alternate play chosen, in case one of the plays is unable to perform. “Persephone” was chosen to be the alternate play. Our District consists of eleven schools, and ranges from Christoval and Irion County, near San Angelo, to Fort Hancock. Because of the size of the District, and the huge distances involved, we are divided into two Zones, and of course, Van Horn is in the Western Zone, along with Iraan, McCamey, Fort Hancock, Marfa, and Wink. The two advancing plays were from Wink and Iraan. Several of our students received awards, and as already stated, all of them did a superior job, making their directors very proud. Those who received awards were: All Star Crew: Desiree Velez; Honorable Mention All Star Cast: Christine Lopez and Ryan Harper; All Star Cast: Desirae Brewster and Junior Carmona. A tentative date for our public performance has been scheduled for May 10. Details will be published in a later edition of The Advocate. A list of those who performed in the play follows: Emiley McCoy, Christine Lopez, Chance Virdell, Anissa Almanza, Haleigh Pena, Amanda Nunez, Margie Martinez, Marcus Martinez, Ryan Harper, Junior Carmona, Desirae Brewster, Banay Humphries, Alex Virdell, Cody Davis, and Rebecca Mendias. Crew members included: Desiree Velez, Jackie Ojeda, Veron Robinson, Dice Navarette, Daniel Wise, and Bryan Alvarado. Alternates were Shannon Davis and Annaliza Rey. These students have worked very hard, performed very well, and would love to see a large audience on hand for their public performance on May 10th. Please plan now to attend.
