- Eagle Elementary held an awards ceremony last Wednesday to hand out various certificates and awards to deserving students in K thru 5th grades. Locals among degree recipients at Sul Ross commencement A total of 244 students, 168 from the Alpine campus and 76 from Rio Grande College, were candidates for degrees during spring commencement exercises at Sul Ross State University. Ceremonies were held Saturday, May10 in the Pete P. Gallego Center on the Alpine Campus and in the Del Rio Civic Center for RGC graduates.. Alpine campus graduates, their degrees and hometowns are listed below. Dominguez picked for UBMS Summer Institute Samuel Dominguez, of Presidio and formerly of Van Horn, has been selected to participate in the 2008 Upward Bound Math & Science Summer Residential Institute at the University of Texas at Arlington. Dominguez is the son of Sylvia Rodriguez, formerly of Van Horn. The Summer Institute is a federally funded program that offers a chance for 60 students to experience college life, take part in activities related to their interest in math and science, and prepare for their next year in high school. The theme of the Summer Institute is “Knowledge for Life...Realizing Your Potential.” During the six week program, Dominguez will interact with math and science professionals, receive mentoring from university faculty and attend class for academic instruction from college professors on campus. This program believes that in order for the United States to remain globally competitive, we must challenge and educate our youth on a level that guarantees math and science literacy to compete in the world of tomorrow. This program has received rave reviews from former students. In addition to rigorous math and science classes, Dominguez will also attend career development workshops, cultural and educational field trips, and be exposed to scientific and research experiences. He will also be enrolled in courses such as literature, composition, foreign language classes and other courses that encourage self-expression. Head earns Ph.D. from University of Illinois On May 11, 2008, Timothy L. Head received his Ph. D. in Physics from the University of Illinois - Urbana. He had completed all the requirements for the degree in the fall of 2007. Head attended Van Horn High School before graduating from the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science. Head then attended Texas Tech University where he graduated with a double major in Mathematics and Physics. Head then attended the University of Illinois where he earned his Masters degree in Mathematics. He now teaches and does research at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. He is the son of Tim Head and Trudie Head. Sul Ross announces summer class schedule Sul Ross State University summer session classes begin Monday, June 2. Summer Session I concludes Monday, July 7 with final examinations, and Summer Session II begins Tuesday, July 8. Summer commencement will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, 10 a.m. , in the Pete P. Gallego Center. The Summer I academic calendar is as follows: * Sunday, June 1: residence halls open and on-line registration ends at midnight. * Monday, June 2: classes, late registration and schedule changes begin. * Thursday, June 5: last day for schedule changes and late registration. Fourth class day. * Saturday, June 7: week-end format classes begin. * Monday, June 16: last day to register for shortened-format courses; class begins this day. * Wednesday, June 18: mid-term. * Friday, June 20: last day to drop a course with a “W.” Drops must be processed in the Registrar’s Office by 4 p.m. * Monday, July 7: final examinations.
