- Mr. Cruz Chacon has been working for CCAISD for 35 years and plans to keep on working with the school for more years. Mr. Chacon happened to receive this job when Mr. Haynes was the Superintendent for the Van Horn Schools.
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a maintenance custodian for Mr. Chacon is working with the school and watching his kids grow up and many other of his relatives. The biggest challenge Mr. Chacon has in his maintenance profession is having all the fields ready for the games. The funniest thing that happened to Mr. Chacon was one time he was driving to a game and he was going to the wrong town. He would have gone to the wrong place if it wasn’t for the coach.
Mr. Chacon was born and raised in Van Horn. The person who has influenced him in life is his wife. She has always been there for him so he can talk to her and have her by his side no matter what. Mr. Chacon has been married for 32 years and he also mentions he has 3 beautiful daughters. As a teen Mr. Chacon ran track through high school. He later on got his GED in 19 76. Mr. Chacon loves working with the schools and watching the students grow and go off to college. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated staff member who is an important part of our children’s lives. Thank you Mr. Chacon for all you do for our schools and our students.
Junior High track teams ran well at McCamey Meet
The Van Horn Junior High track teams, coached by Anna Luna and Michael McBirnie, competed at the McCamey Track Meet before heading into spring break.
Shown below is how these youngsters performed:
Girls Division:
2400 Meter Run: Abril Padilla took 2nd Place.
4 x 100 Meter Relay: Team of Justine Qunitana, K’Cee Romero, Karina Ramirez and Leslie Gonzales took 2nd Place.
100 Meter High Hurdles: Mariela Garza took 1st Place.
100 Meter Dash: Karina Ramirez took 1st place; Cassandra Castro took 3rd Place.
400 Meter Dash: Cassandra Castro took 4th Place; Kianna Fierro took 6th Place.
300 Meter Urdles: Mariela Garza took 2nd Place; Harley Clawson took 4th Place.
200 Meter Dash: Leslie Gonzales took 1st Place; Cassandra Castro took 3rd Place.
4 x 400 Meter Relay: Team of Leslie Gonzales, Abriol Padilla, Karina Ramirez, and Mariela Garza took 1st Place.
High Jump: Mireya Quintana took 4th Place.
Triple Jump: Leslie Gonzales took 1st Place.
Discus: Starvanna Cottrell took 4th Place.
Shot Put: Kianna Fierro took 3rd Place.
Boys Division:
2400 Meter Run: Samuel Quintana took 6th Place.
4 x 100 Meter Relay: Team of Daniel Quintana, Jacob Ontiveros, Benny Lopez, and Ryan Martinez took 2nd Place.
110 Meter Hurdles: Jacob Ontiveros took 2nd Place.
100 Meter Dash: Sam Rivera took 2nd Place; Ryan Martinez took 4th Place.
400 Meter Dash: Cruz Travis took 1st Place.
200 Meter Dash: Sam Rivera took 3rd Place.
4 x 400 Meter Relay: Team of Natan Arrazate, Luis Urias, Cruz Travis and Sam Rivera took 2nd Place; Team of Daniel Quintana, Jacob Ontiveros, Benny Lopez and Ryan Martinez took 4th Place.
High Jump: Sam Rivera took 4th Place.
Long Jump: Sam Rivera took 5th Place.
Discus: Dalton Aumiller tok 1st Place.
Overall in the meet, the Van Horn girls placed 2nd, while the boys placed 7th.
4-H Shooting Sports meeting is next Tuesday
Do you have an interest in shooting sports? Do they include archery, rifle, or shotgun? If you answered yes to these, then plan to attend a Shooting Sports meeting next Tuesday, March 23rd, at 5:30 p.m., at the 4-H Club House.
If you are not a 4-H member, it is not a problem. Come to the meeting and you’ll get signed up.
According to Lainie Koch, everyone who participates in the program will be required to take a mandatory safety course.
Additionally, the 4-Hers will be electing special positions for the club so you won’t want to miss the Tuesday meeting.
