Van Horn seniors graduate with college hours

Band honorees.... The Van Horn Eagle Band passed out some honors during it’s end of the year concernt Monday afternoon. Receiving the honors were: (L to R) Miguel Mendoza - John Phillip Sousa award winner; Hayley McCoy - Band Sweetheart; and Manuel Quintana - Mr. Rhythm.

A program between the El Paso Community College and Van Horn High School was started about six years ago, which allowed students to receive ‘dual credit’ for college hours and required high school courses. Lois Flanagin has been the Coordinator/Instructor for the past few years and reports that this year there were 25 Seniors and 20 Juniors participating in the program. The advantage to this program is that it saves both time and money for those graduating seniors who will be entering college.
The following is a list of the seniors with the number of hours they received from El Paso Community College. Some also received hours this year from Odessa College. Becky Barger is 2008 high school graduate in Granbury
Rebecca Lynn Barger is a 2008 graduate of Happy Hill Farm in Granbury, TX, where she attended high school the past two years.
Becky was in Youth and Government both years, Student Council junior representative and senior class president, Journalism, Choir, FCA member junior year and FCA senior president, Photography, where she placed fourth in State, and Yearbook. Becky was voted Junior Class Favorite and Homecoming Queen.
She played volleyball both years and made first team all-district here senior year. She participated in basketball and track both years and placed 5th at State her Senior year, and ran Cross Country where she placed 21st at State. In Golf she went on to State and here team placed second.
Becky met every qualification for the Bob Bruenig Award. This award goes to the Best All Around Athlete. “This young lady has met every qualification for the Bob Breunig Award. She shows Christian leadership and great sportsmanship in every aspect of her life. She has made a positive impact on the student body and will be hard to replace.”
Becky has received a full scholarship for Culinary School in Fort Worth, where she will be attending in August.

Sarah Means graduates from Austin school
Sarah Anne Means will graduate on May 31, 2008 from St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin, TX. Sarah is the daughter of Jon and Jackie Means.
During her four years at St. Stephen’s, Sarah has served on the Discipline Committee, as senior class president, varsity cheerleader and as proctor in the freshman dormitory. A member of Model United Nations and Blue Key Society, she also played basketball and was a member of the varsity cross country and softball teams. She has chaired the school’s blood drive held twice yearly in conjunction with the Blood and Tissues Center of Central Texas. Following her sophomore year, she participated in a summer service trip to Granada, Nicaragua.
Sarah has developed a proficiency and love for writing and photography both of which she hopes to pursue in college. She will attend TCU in Fort Worth in the fall where she plans to study English Literature and Spanish.
