Theatre of the Big Bend to hold summer production auditions

-
The Theatre of the Big Bend, Alpine, Texas, will be holding auditions for it’s three shows slated for this summer. The first show of the season, “Cowgirls,” a musical by Besty Howie, will open June 27, 2008 and run every weekend until July 13, 2008. Auditions for “Cowgirls” will take place in both Alpine and Midland, Texas. The Alpine auditions will be Monday, May 5 and Tuesday, May 6 at 5 P.M. in the Francois Fine Arts Building Studio Theatre on the Sul Ross campus. Auditions for “Cowgirls” in Midland will take place in the auditorium of the Fine Arts Building of the Midland College Campus.
“Cowgirls,” directed by Dona W. Roman, is a country versus classical music mash up about a famous country-western saloon in jeopardy of foreclosure. The women of the saloon mistakenly hire a classical music trio in hopes to save the saloon. The misunderstanding leads to laughs, song and dance, and the coming together of two very different groups. Justin Badgerow will offer musical direction with vocal direction by Donald Callen Freed. The cast calls for 6 woman who can sing and play instruments.
The second show of the season, “Petra’s Cuento,” written by Rupert Reyes, Jr. and directed by Liz Castillo, continues the story of the lovable, superstitious and somewhat meddlesome Petra as she tries to reconnect with her daughter and grandchildren after a worrisome visit to the doctor. The bilingual comedy reunites us with the characters of “Petra’s Pecado” and introduces us to more of Petra’s family. The script calls for 4 men and 6 women, ages 9 to 90 years old.
The final show of the season, “Pecos Bill and the Ghost Stampede,” by Eric Coble and directed by Dr. Keith West, is a larger than life, Pecos Bill tall-tale production the whole family can enjoy. Packed from beginning to end with action, laughs and the world’s largest prairie dog, “Pecos Bill and the Ghost Stampede” is a show for the cowboy in all of us, with a cast of 2 men and 2 women.
“Petra’s Cuento” and “Pecos Bill and the Ghost Stampede” will have joint auditions in Alpine only on June 2 and 3 at 5 P.M. in the Francois Fine Arts Building Studio Theatre on the Sul Ross Campus.
Additional information and scripts for all three shows are available, prior to auditions, by contacting the Sul Ross State University Fine Arts and Communication office at 432-837-8218.

May is Motorcycle Safety Month
May is Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month in Texas, and DPS urges all motorcyclists and the traveling public to practice safe driving habits.
The 852,781 licensed motorcyclists in the state can improve their own safety by following this advice from DPS:
• Attend a professionally taught motorcycle safety course. (Call 1-800-292-5787 for information.)
• Wear protective equipment, including a helmet, whenever riding.
• Ride defensively.
• Avoid risk-taking behavior, such as speeding, weaving in between traffic and riding while intoxicated.
Nationally, almost half of all motorcycle fatalities involve alcohol.
Drivers in vehicles other than motorcycles should realize that motorcycles are sometimes difficult to see, so keep an eye out for them. Don’t cut them off, and give them extra space.
Record numbers of Texans are taking advantage of the basic and advanced motorcycle operator training offered by the DPS Motorcycle Safety Unit. Last year, 33,697 Texans took either the basic or advanced course, setting an all-time record number for the thirteenth straight year.
The basic course may be used to waive the licensing road test, and both of the courses may qualify for ticket dismissal and insurance discounts. Motorcycle riders can locate the course nearest to them by visiting the DPS Web site www.txdps.state.tx.us/msb/ and can take advantage of 81 permanent locations and nine mobile sites across the state.
“We continue to notice an increase in crashes involving returning riders, meaning those who have ridden before, took some time off from riding and are getting back into it.” said John G. Young, coordinator of the DPS Motorcycle Safety Unit. “We want to encourage them to enroll in one of our courses to brush up on their skills.”
In 2006 (latest statistics available), 346 people in Texas died as a result of motorcycle crashes—63 percent of those were not wearing a helmet. Texas law states that in order to be exempt from wearing a helmet, a person must be at least 21 years of age. In addition, they must successfully complete a motorcycle safety course or be covered by a health insurance plan providing at least $10,000 in medical benefits for motorcycle-related injuries. DPS recommends all motorcycle riders wear helmets.
For additional information on motorcycle training, call 512-424-2021 or toll-free at 1-800-292-5787. More safety information is available at www.looklearnlive.org.
