Van Horn Jr. High is proud to introduce Mrs. Carrillo who has taught school for the past 16 years. Currently Mrs. Carrillo teaches language arts. She revealed that even if she could have chosen another profession, she would still choose teaching. The most rewarding part of being a teacher is when the students are successful at the end of the school year. On the other hand the biggest challenge of teaching is reaching every child.
The funniest moment that happened in her life was when she was enrolling students and a mother said her child was half Anglo, half Hispanic and concussion. Mrs. Carrillo was born in Mexico and raised in Van Horn. The person who had a big influence in her life was Mrs. Dees, her second grade teacher. She made her feel proud of being bilingual. Mrs. Dees worked with her after school to help her with her studies.
The adjectives that describe her is dedicated, hardworking, and persistent. What the students have taught Mrs. Carrillo is they taught her to be persistent and never give up no matter what the level is. The sport that she played when she was in high school was basketball and she graduated from Van Horn High School. She enjoys spending time with her family.
Van Horn Jr. High is also proud to introduce Miss Annie Luna who has taught school for the past 11 years. Currently Miss Luna teaches 7th and 8th grade history and 6th grade grammar. Miss Luna was born in Van Horn but grew up in Midland, TX. She lived there until she graduated from high school in 1990. Miss Luna chooses the teaching profession because she came from a family of teachers. She revealed that she has been around teaching all of her life.
The most rewarding part of being a teacher is reaching out to students that no one else has been able to reach. She stated that “When the light goes on in them I know I’m doing what I was meant to do.” Miss Luna says everything is a challenge because it keeps me on my toes. One person who has influenced her in life the most is her grandfather, Heradio G. Luna because at the age of 54 he earned his college degree which makes her want to be a better person. She describes herself as hardworking and her students have taught her lots of patience.
Van Horn Jr. High is very fortunate to have these two excellent teachers on the staff. The students are lucky to have two teachers who care not only about them but also our community. Their commitment to Van Horn is outstanding and much appreciated.
And, it should also be noted that both of these teachers had 100% passing scores for their students in last year’s TAKS. Quite a feat for these teachers and their principal last year, John Fabela, voiced his appreciation to them.

Lady Eagles end their season with loss to Forsan
The Van Horn Lady Eagle basketball team traveled to Ft. Stockton Monday evening to do battle with the girls from Forsan in a bi-district play-off game.
The Lady Eagles gave it their all, but were no match for the much stronger team from Forsan. When the final buzzer sounded, the Lady Eagles season was over, losing to Forsan by a score of 76 to 26.
On the bright side, Coach Raul Tucker praised the play of Aubry Durbin and Banay Humphries who had 10 points and 7 points respectively in the game.
Coach Tucker said the girls finished the season with a record of 13 wins and 14 losses. “We’re looking to next year as we have a good group of returners plus some solid JV girls coming up,” Tucker commented.
And, coach Tucker noted, “I’d personally like to thank all the fans who have supported us this year through thick and thin. They helped us achieve what we did.”

As of late
yesterday, AD Joe Salinas did not know who the Eagles were playing in the play-offs. Sites were being picked for games.
