The Van Horn Eagle varsity girls and boys hit the road Tuesday evening as they took on the Dell City Cougars in Dell City.
The Lady Eagles, coached by Raul Tucker, picked up where they left off before the Christmas break. They defeated the Cougars by a score of 52 to 25.
The Lady Eagles were led in scoring by Sara Serrano who had 17 points and 5 assists. Aubry Durbin added another 10 points, while Jenna Flores controlled the boards with 12 rebounds.
Coach Tucker was very pleased with the play of his girls and said, “This was a great way to start off the new year. I’m very excited about our upcoming games as they will prepare us for the start of district play on January 29th. I believe that we have a great opportunity to compete for the district title this year!”
Following the girls contest, the Eagle boys took the court and in the first half of play had to shed the holiday gitters. At the half, the boys held on to a slim 1 point lead.
However, the second half was a different story. Coach Ortega let his charges loose and they put lots of pressure on Dell City forcing the desired mistakes. From that point, the Eagles never looked back and ultimately won the game by a score of 65 to 54.
Coach Ortega noted following the game, “I wasn’t pleased with our first half play and let the kids know it. I was pleased, however, with their defensive play.”
Ortega went on to add, “That is where championships are won on the defensive end of the court. If we can continue to play tough defense we should be fine down the stretch.”
Eagle scoring leaders were Rutesh Bhakta with 22 points and Eleno Mendez who added another 10 points for the Eagles.
Both the varsity girls and boys teams will see action tomorrow when they face the Balmorea Bears in Balmorhea. Come out and support the Eagles as they battle the Bears tomorrow!
