Eagles lost to Kermit but score does not reflect how game was played

The Van Horn Eagles ventured into Kermit Yellowjacket territory last Friday evening to do battle. And, while the Eagles lost the contest 26 to 6, the score does not really reflect the intensity of the game.
Head coach Joe Salinas told the Advocate, “We were ready to play them and play them we did for 3 and a half quarters. Then our own mistakes sunk us!”
The Yellowjackets thought they would pound the Eagles since it was there homecoming but the Eagles gave them a tough fight, until late in the final quarter when the Eagles apparently self destructed.
Coach Salinas noted, “We had played them pretty good as our defense was in the game mall the time and they only had a 14 to 6 lead half way through the 4th quarter. But, in the last half of that quarter, we muffed snaps, fumbled the ball and in short order, Kermit added another 12 points to the score board.”
Salinas concluded by saying, “Of course we were disappointed but we can’t look back, We have to look forward to this week, and that’s what were doing!”

Eagles face off against Tornillo Coyotes tomorrow
The Van Horn Eagles and their coaches have been working hard all week preparing for the contest tomorrow against the Tornillo Coyotes on the road.
This game is Tornillo’s homecoming and will add some challenges to the game.
Head coach Joe Salinas told the Advocate that, “We’ve been working on the strengths of Tornillo that we saw in the film of their games. Their numbers aren’t any better than ours, in terms of kids playing, and their size is like ours. This means that we can match up with them pretty evenly.”
Coach Salinas went on to note, “They have some kids in skill positions but don’t seem to have the depth that we’ve seen in our other opponents.”
“Our practices this week have been very good, and our morale and determination is great,” noted Salinas. “We’re fairly healthy going into the contest,” Salinas said.
Kick off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Tornillo. Eagle coaches urge all Eagle fans to make the trek to Tornillo and support the Van Horn Eagles!

Lady Eagles have seen lots of action
Melinda Flores and her Lady Eagles have been pretty busy over the past week, playing in the Sul Ross Tournament in Alpine and at home Tuesday in a dual matchup.
Flores did not report on the outcome of these matchups, but we do know that our Lady Eagles are gaining good experience in preparation for the district competition.

JV lost to Kermit, 28 to 0
The Van Horn Eagle JV football squad tackled the Kermit JV last Thursday evening at Eagle Field.
The Eagles simply could not get on track in the contest which saw several key players sustain injuries that really hurt us.
In the end, Kermit simply overpowered the JV, 28 to 0.
The JV is idle this week because Tornillo canceled the game due to a lack of players.
