The Van Horn Eagle basketball team traveled to Midland last Friday evening to battle Farwell in an Area play-off game.
Farwell, according to head coach Armando Ortega, was even taller than last year and they came into Midland Lee gymnasium eager to settle the score for their loss to Van Horn last year.
The Eagles played well in the first half but simply could not overcome the height advantage to take the lead.
Coach Ortega told the Advocate that “We made some adjustments at the half and the Eagles came out fighting. By the end of the 3rd quarter, the Eagles had grabbed the lead but in the 4th quarter, the lead see-sawed between the Eagles and Farwell.”
At the final buzzer, however, the Eagles had lost their lead and the game. The loss to Farwell ended the Eagle’s post season play.
Coach Armando Ortega commented, “We had a good season, overall, and I’m proud of our kids. I’m losing 5 seniors and I have 5 returning players for next year so I have a good base on which to start.”

Eagles drop season opener to Crane Golden Cranes
The Van Horn Eagle varsity baseball team, with virtually no practice sessions under their belt, opened their season last Monday evening, facing the Crane Golden Cranes.
For a squad with little practice, the Eagles held their own against the 2A Cranes. In fact, going into the top of the 5th inning, the Eagles held a 9 to 6 lead.
However, by the bottom of the 6th inning, the Eagles had fallen behind by a score of 12 to 9 and that was the losing tally.
The Eagles will be playing in the Crane Invitational Baseball Tournament this weekend before returning home for next week’s Oasis in the Desert Tournament here.
