Main Street will host Frontier Days Street Dance on June 16th

A cool summer place.... The City swimming pool is open to the public daily, except Mondays, and makes a wonderful way to escape the summer heat our community has been experiencing lately. And, the pool is available for private parties after it closes to the public. The pool is managed by Yolanda and Armando Ortega and is staffed by certified life guards at all times.

The Van Horn Main Street Program has announced that it will host its annual Frontier Days Street Dance on June 16, 2007. The usual activities will be a part of the event including street vendors from 5 pm to 1 am and the dance fun from 9 pm until the 1 am closing time.
Wayne West will provide the entertainment and dance music for the evening while Main Street provides the beverages for the event and holds its annual jalapeno eating contest, complete with a $100 prize for the winner. The winner will be the one who eats the most jalapenos in a one minute time frame while the crowd jeers and cheers all around.
The weekend’s festivities will actually begin on Friday evening when Main Street hosts its first of three Summer Movies on the Wall. The movie will begin at 10 pm and those who wish to attend will need to bring their own chairs and drinks. Main Street will provide free popcorn.
On Saturday morning, the Clark Hotel Museum will host its annual Pancake Breakfast, but this year, they’ve changed the event to a Pancake Brunch so that all those moviegoers don’t have to get up so early to enjoy the pancakes. The Pancake Brunch will begin at 9 am and run until noon. Proceeds will benefit the programs of the Clark Hotel Museum.
Vendors who have signed up for the Street Dance will begin setting up at 3 pm and will officially open at 5 pm. They will be open for business from 5 until the end of the dance at 1 am. During the 5 to 9 time frame, Main Street will provide music and beverages for those who are shopping the vendor booths.
The dance will begin at 9:00 pm, or just as soon as the band can get set up and start playing their music. The gates of the dance will open at 9:00 pm also. Anyone who is visiting the vendors at that time will be kindly asked to step outside the perimeter of the dance and reenter through the gate. This year’s dance prices remain the same with everyone over the age of 5 paying $6 to get in and everyone under 6 years old getting in for free when accompanied by their parents.
As always, the dance is designed as a family event, so everyone is invited to attend. Wayne West y Grupo Potrero will play the entire evening with the exception of a few 15 minute breaks when they will provide some crowd favorites by the original artists via the wonderful technology of CD’s.
Vendors who are interested in selling their food and/or wares at the event, and have not already received an entry form, may contact Jeff McCoy at 283-7494. Vendors can also reserve a vendor booth by dropping by city hall or the Van Horn Convention Center. Vendor booth spaces are $40 and electricity is provided (but not the extension cord). Call McCoy for further details.

Congratulations to Veronica Borrego for passing another step in getting her license to become a funeral director (see story, this issue). There’s only one problem - she’s now getting calls from out-of-town firms with offers of employment. She would really like to stay here in her hometown and we’d really like to see her do just that. So, Veronica, ‘just say No’

The ‘Gidget Cheerleaders’ are getting organized and starting to raise funds for camp and uniforms. In fact their first big fund raiser is a softball tournament June 23-24. Entry fee is $150.00 per team, with 1st, 2nd, and MVP prizes. Contact person for more info is Missy Virdell , 915-539-1918.
So what in the world are the “Gidget Cheerleaders” you ask. Well, it’s about 44 ‘little’ cheerleaders, who aspire to be ‘big’ cheerleaders someday. The girls get experience in working as a team and will train to go to some competitions. Evidently this is not a new thing in many places, but here in Van Horn it’s just getting started, and provides a physical activity for the young girls, who maybe would like another option besides sports. And what little girl hasn’t wanted to be a cheerleader at one point or another!

I’m excited about two new features we’re starting this week in the Advocate. Larry will be writing one each week, spotlighting our Veterans, beginning with those who served in World War II. I know we will enjoy this, and appreciate them even more. We’ll be getting help with names from Hector Lujan, County Veterans Service Officer.
Shiela Gilmore will be giving us some healthy summer eating tips and recipes. She is a very health-conscious cook, and don’t we all need that? Thanks, Shiela.
I will continue at least a few more weeks with Guess Who because I have several more people in mind that I just haven’t been able to catch up with at a convenient time for them. I’m glad it is something that our readers have enjoyed, and I really have loved getting to know people better. We have lots of great people in this town, and there are so many, many more that I wish I had time to set down and visit with - one on one.

This true story came to us off the internet, and offer it to you. A little ‘food for thought’.........
I am a mother of three and have recently completed my college degree. The last class I had to take was Sociology. The teacher was absolutely inspiring with the qualities that I wish every human being had been graced with. Her last project of the term was called “Smile.” The class was asked to go out and smile at three people and document their reactions
I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway, so, I thought this would be a piece of cake.
Soon after we were assigned the project, my husband, youngest son, and I went out to McDonald’s one crisp March morning. We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away, and then even my husband did. As I turned around I smelled a horrible “dirty body” smell, and there standing behind me were two poor homeless men.
As I looked down at the short gentleman, close to me, he was “smiling”. His beautiful sky blue eyes were full of God’s Light as he searched for acceptance.
He said, “Good day” as he counted the few coins he had been clutching. The second man fumbled with his hands as he stood behind his friend. J I realized the second man was mentally challenged and the blue-eyed gentleman was his salvation.
I held my tears as I stood there with them. The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted. He said, “Coffee is all Miss”. I knew that was all they could afford, but if they wanted to sit in the restaurant and warm up, they had to buy something. He just wanted to be warm.
That is when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me, judging my every action. I smiled and asked the young lady behind the counter to give me two more breakfast meals on a separate tray. I walked around the corner to the table that the men had chosen as a resting spot. I put the tray on the table and laid my hand on the blue-eyed gentleman’s cold hand. He looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said, “Thank you.”
I leaned over, began to pat his hand and said, “God is here working through me to give you hope.”
I started to cry as I walked away to join my husband and son. When I sat down my husband smiled at me and said, “That is why God gave you to me, Honey, to give me hope.”
We are not church goers, but we are believers. That day showed me the pure Light of God’s sweet love. We as human beings and being part of God, share this need to heal people and to be healed. In my own way I had touched the people at McDonald’s, my husband, son, and especially two cold, hungry human beings. I learned one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn - UNCONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE.
