“The Reckoning,” a 30 minute western short film, is being filmed here. In fact, shooting for the film is expected to be completed today.
“The Reckoning” is being directed by William Booth, with the able assistance of David Read as Assistant Director.
Booth told the Advocate that “The Reckoning” is the story of a frontier ranching family that encountered unexpected treachery while enjoying breakfast at their ranch one morning.
The rancher, played by Lance Eakright, and his wife, played by Julie Osborne, had just settled down for breakfast when they were approached by three desperate looking vaqueros, played by Roberto Santoya Ramos, Brad Hartliep, and Gerardo Davilla.
The rancher told his wife to get into the ranch house as he greeted the vaqueros. After asking for food or water, the vaqueros start to leave and then abruptly shoot the rancher dead.
They then took his wife, raped her and left her for dead, taking her necklace in the process.
The rest of the story is about the sister’s efforts to track down the vaqueros and extract revenge. The part is played by Pauline Reese.
With each vaquero, she nears her quest. The first one she finds with her sisters necklace. After killing him, she moves on after the second.
She comes upon the second vaquero and tricks him into thinking she is just traveling the same way he is. However, he spies the necklace she’s wearing and immediately recognizes it as that taken from her sister. And she does him in.
The sister catches the third one at a watering hole and after some seductive games things seem to ease. However, sensing a confrontation in the making, the pair appear to part and then each reaches for their gun. The sister is faster and the last thing the vaquero sees is the image of that necklace.
Booth told the Advocate that this 30 minute short film will be taken to several shows and producers in an attempt to sell the idea for a full feature film. And, Booth added, “I think it will have a very good chance.”
He went on to say, “We have an excellent cast, with some incredible acting, supported by a fantastic crew, and shot at an incredible location. It’s going to be a great short and could be a great full-length movie.”
The film is being shot among the red rocks of the McVay Ranch, north of town, and director Booth commented, “I’m so very pleased to be able to shoot this film on the McVay Ranch. They’ve been most helpful to our film, the scenery is breathtaking, and the entire crew is so appreciative.”
Booth noted that the idea for the film came from a CD entitled “Midnight Drifter” performed by a country music group from the Dallas-Ft. Worth area called the Whiskey Folk Ramblers.
Pauline Reese, the films leading lady, is also a western recording artist with 5 CD’s out. And, she has also entertained with Willie Nelson.
