Gary R. Smith in concert Sunday

Gary R. Smith
By Larry D. Simpson
-
Country and Gospel recording artist Gary R. Smith will be in concert this Sunday right here in Van Horn!
Smith, who packs concert sites everywhere he goes, is coming to Van Horn because he has a “heart for small towns in Texas.”
Gary Smith grew up in a small town near Houston and by the time he was 12, he was writing his own songs and had started his own band. He was destined to make his mark on the Nashville Music scene.
Before he was 20, Gary had landed his first recording contract and had performed with the likes of B.J. Thomas, Mickey Gilley, Grady Nutt and a host of others.
On his way to the top, Gary became a born again Christian and has since led city-wide crusades, filmed television specials and has performed with Cynthia Clawson, The Cruse Family, Wanda Jackson and others.
Gary has released ten albums, among them “Road To Life’s Other Side” and “I’ll Do It For Love which includes three #1 hits.
Gary will perform in nearly 150 concerts this year and says, “I want to use my God given talent to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to a lost and dying world and to encourage believers everywhere.” “My goal through this concert is to see Jesus Christ exalted!”
Smith has recorded five #1 hits, he has written or co-written numerous #1 hits, and his albums are played on country, country gospel and southern gospel radio stations throughout the country.
He has received numerous awards including Entertainer of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year from 1998 to 2002. His recording have been recommended for 3 Grammies.
And you can hear him in concert right here in Van Horn this Sunday, April 22nd, at 6 p.m., at the First Baptist Church. Admission tickets are FREE and are available at Van Horn Office Tech, Lomax Shell and the Church office.

TWDB to conduct water survey in West Texas counties
Austin - The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) will be conducting a groundwater survey of the Capitan Reef Complex aquifer in Brewster, Culberson, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, Pecos, Reeves, Ward, and Winkler counties in support of the Groundwater Availability Modeling (GAM) program of the minor aquifers of Texas. This survey will begin in April with an inventory of wells and springs in the area and will include revisiting known wells and springs and locating new or un-inventoried wells or springs.
As a part of this inventory, wells will be located using Global Positioning System (GPS) units. Depth to water, spring flows, yield, and drawdown will be measured, where possible. Some water quality samples will also be collected. After review of the inventory, some wells may be selected to make further hydraulic properties tests (aquifer tests).
Water-level data will be used to map the water table for comparison to historical data. The drawdown and yield measurements will provide specific-capacity information about the well. The water quality samples will characterize the type of water and aid in determining recharge. The aquifer tests will provide the hydraulic properties of the aquifer, which are essential components of the aquifer modeling process.
The TWDB will contact the regional water planning groups, groundwater conservation districts, water well drillers, landowners, and other entities to facilitate access to information and properties. The cooperation of the entities/owners is essential for the successful completion of this project in a timely and efficient manner. Experienced TWDB staff will be conducting this inventory and will work to respect the interests of all landowners. A map of the study area is attached.
For more information, or if you have any comments or questions about the survey, please contact Doug Coker at 512-936-0874.
The TWDB is the state agency charged with collecting and disseminating water-related data, assisting with regional planning, and preparing the State Water Plan for the development of the state’s water resources, and administering cost-effective financial programs for the construction of water supply, wastewater treatment, flood control and agricultural water conservation projects.
