I don’t know that I ever remember a colder Easter weekend. At least it warmed up enough Sunday afternoon to get outside and enjoy hiding those Easter eggs. We saw a lot of sweaters and jackets over those Easter outfits Sunday morning, but the message of our risen Lord was as warm and bright as ever!
Even though a low of 29 degrees is what our thermometer showed for the weekend, it looks like all the new growth on trees and shrubs wasn’t hurt. I cut open a tiny little peach and the center wasn’t dark, which is a good sign that they will continue to grow and not swivel up and fall off like they do when they have been frozen.
So...with the threat of a late freeze probably over now for sure, it’s time to get outside and get those hands dirty beautifying our yards.....and thus our town. The hardware stores have lawn fertilizer and Pueblo Market is encouraging gardening with something different this year. Check out their flyer inserted in this issue of the Advocate. The Dollar General has pots and soil for container gardening. Now all we need is a place to buy bedding plants and shrubs and trees. Maybe in the future we’ll have that here too.
And don’t forget the city-wide clean-up scheduled for next weekend. A good place to start is your own yard and ally! We’ll have more information about the clean-up in next week’s issue of the Advocate.

I want to wish a speedy recovery to an old friend and former resident of Van Horn, Margaret Lane. She underwent a triple by-pass surgery last week. Word is that she is doing okay. I know she would appreciate hearing from her many Van Horn friends. We’re praying and pulling for you Margaret!

We enjoy receiving newspapers from several towns in West Texas. One of those is the Seminole Sentinel. A familiar face was on the front page of the March 25th issue and a very nice feature story about Claude (C.L.) Chappell, who graduated from VHHS in 1953. He started coaching football in Lubbock in 1957, where he coached for 8 years before moving to Harlingen in 1965. There, he coached for another four years before moving to El Paso where he became a defensive coordinator for Burgess High school. From there he went to Seminole as head coach for 8 years, compiling an overall record 40 wins, 19 losses and 1 tie, for the first six years, even as the smallest school in their conference.
After he left coaching, he and his wife, the former Jomilee Lomax, built the Steak Place Restaurant and ran it for 14 years. He had a hard time staying retired, and was persuaded to go back and coach junior high and teach until three years ago. Jomilee retired from teaching in 2004. They have two sons and 5 grandchildren.
Even though he is known as “Coach”, he is beginning to be known as an accomplished artist. When asked for a quote, he said he wasn’t much of a philosopher but, “Live your talents that God gave you.”

Since our readers seem to really enjoy names and faces from the past, we thought we might start a new feature - ‘Photos From The Past’. You’ll find our first one in this issue. We’ll need your help with this. We could get lots of them out of old issue of the Advocate, but they are much better if we can get the actual photograph and scan it. So look through those old pictures and bring one in. Thanks for your help with this.

We get a lot of news releases from the office of the Attorney General of Texas. Mostly they don’t really relate to our readers but one we got yesterday hit a little closer to home, though not affecting anyone locally. Just a sad example of where we have gone as a society, since this type of thing seems to be in the news far too often in recent years.
A Ward County grand jury in Monahans on Tuesday returned 13 indictments against two former West Texas State School administrators for improper sexual conduct with six students, ages 16-19. These two were Texas Youth Commission officials Ray Edward Brookins, a former assistant superintendent of the school, and John Paul Hernandez, a former principal.
West Texas State School is the Texas Youth Commission facility in Pyote. Hopefully these two will get the proper punishment they deserve. I’m afraid so much of what is wrong with kids today is adults. And that is a shame!

A few ‘positive attitude’ thoughts for the week.......
Let your efforts rise above your excuses.
For success, attitude is as important as ability.
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.
Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.
