A special donation received.... Robert Stuckey, Clark Hotel Museum curator, proudly shows off the newest exhibit in the museum. The donation was made to the museum by Paul and Warren Bosenbury of San Marcus, Texas. The exhibit is a $25 U.S. War Savings Bond that was purchased in the Van Horn Post Office on February 23, 1943 from Postmaster Clara Bean by their mother. The War Savings Bond was never redeemed and is in mint condition. Stuckey is very proud to have the new exhibit in the museum and expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Bosenbury brothers for the donation.

It’s the season for one of my favorite sports - Little Dribblers. I am amazed by the hustle of these small players and their determination and desire. Their games are on Friday evenings and Saturdays and a concession stand helps benefit the Youth Association. You should go out and enjoy watching these young athletes. I know you will enjoy it. They will probably take this weekend off since it is Easter, but will be back next weekend.

A couple of weeks ago we had a picture of ‘Goliath’ in the paper. The big longhorn is something different and many have enjoyed going out and meeting him. Well, there is now a baby longhorn, as well as two others. They are out at the Mountain View RV Park and the owners, Doug and Rita Hodges invite you to bring your children out and meet these unique animals. We were out there Sunday evening and the baby was in a real playful mood, running around and showing off. There are a couple of burros also - Jack and Jenny.

Occasionally we are able to spotlight people who grew up here in Van Horn and have moved on and become very successful in their chosen fields of work. We are always proud to let you know about these, but I’m sure there are many who we don’t hear about, so let us know and we’ll be glad to spotlight them as well.
But there is one group of professionals who grew up here in Van Horn and chose to come back to Van Horn after getting degrees. They may not be in a field that is making them loads of money (not enough in my estimation), but their importance is in the job that they do. I’m talking about out teachers. To me, there is not a more critical profession that anyone might choose than that of teaching our children. So, to all our teachers and administrators I want to say thank you, thank you, thank you, especially to those who were born and raised in Van Horn and decided, even with its faults, to come back and teach here. You are way up there on the list of important people to me.

One of my favorite characters in the biblical account of the Easter story is Joseph of Arimathea. I found the following narrative out of a “Daily Guideposts” devotional book.
“We walked slowly along the garden path, carrying the body of Jesus. It seemed impossible our Lord was dead.......”Step quickly,” Nicodemus cautioned, glancing at the gathering darkness. “The Sabbath is upon us.” We were on our way to lay him in my own rock-hewn sepulcher.
I’d hastened to Pilot the moment Jesus died to ask for the body. I took him off the cross myself. How can I express the despair I felt holding his disfigured body in my own arms? Rain splattered around me as I wrapped him in clean linen with myrrh and aloe. It is over. Jesus is dead. The words became a refrain playing over and over in the litany of raindrops...in the wind murmuring over my head. We placed him inside the tomb and rolled a great stone across the door. Then we hurried away, past a little knot of women standing nearby.
It was two days later when I was startled awake by the sound of banging on my door. What could be so urgent at the first pink of dawn?
“Sire, Jesus is not there! The tomb is empty!” a woman cried when I opened the door. I seemed to recognize her as one of those I’d seen near the sepulcher on Friday.
I pushed past her, hurrying toward the tomb. The stone was rolled aside. Bending down to peer in, I saw the grave clothes lying precisely as I’d left them.....only they were empty! Empty like a cocoon when the life inside it has emerged. And it was as if a light pierced my heart and the risen Christ entered inside it. I did not need to see him. I knew. He was risen!
I was an old man, yet I danced through the garden like a child. A bright new music filled the earth. He is alive. He is alive! Hallelujah!”

My prayer for you at this most holy time is that you may experience your own resurrection of hope and peace and joy. Have a blessed Easter!
