Planning for all those fun summer activities is underway. Hope your plans include a nice vacation, or at least some leisurely time doing the things you enjoy doing.
The city pool is open and with the warm weather that has finally come our way it will be a popular place in the next few weeks. It’s open each afternoon, except Monday, and is also available for parties. You can get more information about that at City Hall, or by dropping by the pool in the afternoons.
The library has an ad in this issue telling about their summer reading program. Also, the library is doing something new this summer, with the help of Shiela Gilmore. Starting in next week’s Advocate, she will be submitting a Reading List with 6 to 10 books for three different age groups - 3rd through 5th grade, 6th through 8th grade, and 9th through 12th grade. Each week she will do a book review from one or two of these books, which we will publish in the Advocate. At the end of the summer, special recognition will be given to those who have read every book on their particular age list. Hopefully that will keep kids doing something very constructive during those long days of summer - READING.
And in case you were wondering about Frontier Days - YES there is going to be the annual event which has been held the 3rd weekend in June for more years than I can remember. It will kick off with the ‘Movie on the Wall’ Friday night. This has become a popular event for young and old alike. On Saturday there will be various events, concluding with the street dance in the evening. Look for more details in next week’s Advocate.

It seems like just a few years ago during a Frontier Days that we took a picture of two little Conoly twins in a stroller. They were in town with their Mom and Dad, Tim and Dawn Conoly for the festivities and to visit their grandparents, Martha and John Conoly. Well, those little twins just graduated from Texas Tech - one to become a teacher and one going on to study in the field of medicine. Congratulations to Sara and Kara - but where on earth did those years go?
John Conoly was in the office this week sharing this information with us, but also with other good news about his voice. He had more medical work done one his vocal cords and the prognosis looks good. His doctor said he should have his voice back real soon. He has struggled with this condition, even months before retiring from his long career as county judge.
He was honored recently before a session of the state legislature. See the picture in this issue. Congratulations, Judge Conoly, for some much deserved recognition.

And speaking of how time flies, here are some things you might have heard being said in a coffee shop - in 1955.........
“I’ll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it’s going to be impossible to buy a week’s groceries for $20.”
“Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won’t be long before $2000 will only buy a used one.”
“If cigarettes keep going up in price, I’m going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous.”
“Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?”
“If they raise the minimum wage to $1, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.”
“When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we’d be better off leaving the car in the garage.”
“Kids today are impossible. Those duck tail hair cuts make it impossible to stay groomed. Next thing you know, boys will be wearing their hair as long as the girls.”
“I’m afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying ‘damn’ in ‘Gone With The Wind,’ it seems every new movie has either ‘hell’ or ‘damn’ in it.”
“I read the other day where some scientist thinks it’s possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas .”
“Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn’t surprise me if someday they’ll be making more than the president.”
“I never thought I’d see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.”
“It’s too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.”
“It won’t be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.”
“Marriage doesn’t mean a thing any more; those Hollywood stars seem to be getting divorced at the drop of a hat.”
“I’m just afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.”
“Thank goodness I won’t live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to government.” (THINGS HAVEN’T CHANGED! WE KEEP SENDING THE SAME SORT OF PEOPLE TO WASHINGTON TO REPRESENT US! WON’T WE EVER LEARN?)
“The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.”
“There is no sense going to Lincoln or Omaha anymore for a weekend. It costs nearly $15 a night to stay in a hotel.”
“No one can afford to be sick any more; $35 a day in the hospital is too rich for my blood.”
“If they think I’ll pay 50 cents for a hair cut, forget it.”
