Gerald Scott, a retired geologist living here in Van Horn, recently discovered a Pterodactyl fossil along the Interstate near the Boracho Road interchange.
With the approval of the scientific naming authority, Scott proposed to name this new species Pterodactyyloidea borachones. The newly excavated remains of this, nearly intact, Pterodactyl will be a special exhibit at this weeks “Building Bridges Art Show” being held at the Van Horn Convention Center.
The “Building Bridges Art Show” features local artists including: Michael Hidalgo, a local teacher who will also present student artwork from Junior High and High School students; Ann Banta; Catie Kinford; artwork from students of the Association of Christian Home Educators of Van Horn; Carole Fitzgerald; Sue Hill; Philip Rose; Patricia Golden; Jesus Norman; Shirley Worrell; and of course, Gerald Scott’s Pterodactyyloidea Borachones sculpture.

Town will sponsor a rabies clinic Sunday
The Town of Van Horn will sponsor a Rabies Clinic on Sunday, April 19, 2009, from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Convention Center, located at 1801 W. Broadway. The Town of Van Horn sponsors the Rabies Clinic twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall. The purpose of the Rabies Clinic is to give local pet owners a chance to have their pets vaccinated against rabies for a discounted rate. Pet owners also have the opportunity to purchase pet licenses from the Town of Van Horn, which is an annual requirement according to the Van Horn Municipal Code
Dr. Ken Waldrup is the Texas Department State Health Services Zoonosis Control Veterinarian for Region 9-10, which includes Van Horn. This is a rabid area, according to Dr. Waldrup. Rabies Clinics are important because “first, they give people the chance to comply with State law, because rabies vaccinations are required by the State, and cats and dogs are no exception; and secondly, rabies vaccines are really an inexpensive insurance for pets and their families because the pets will not become rabid when they come into contact with rabid wildlife,” said Dr. Waldrup.
The Van Horn Municipal Code Chapter 6.04 provides for animal control regulation to include the requirement for annual rabies vaccinations and licensing for all dogs and cats four months of age and older kept within the city limits of Van Horn or its ETJ. All such animals are required to wear a harness or collar with the rabies vaccination tag and license tag attached to it.
The Animal Control regulations further require that no animal shall be permitted to run at large upon the public streets or alleys or any public place within the town, or on the private property of another. It is also unlawful for the owner of any dog to allow the dog to continually make unusual or loud barking noises or howling which disturbs the peace and quiet of the neighborhood or of adjacent premises.
For additional information of Animal Control regulations, please contact the Town of Van Horn.
