Texas Crossroads Cowboy Poetry Gathering is here this weekend

Harlem Starz dazzle audience.... The Harlem Starz made another appearence here Monday evening. The five players took on a varied team from Van Horn and showed the hometown audience what razzle and dazzle on the basketball court is all about.

The 1st Annual Texas Crossroads Cowboy Poetry Gathering will be held here in Van Horn this Friday and Saturday. This Gathering is not meant to be in competition with the one being held in Alpine this weekend. Instead, it is aimed at complementing the show in Alpine.
The Show’s organizer, Bob Kinford, of Van Horn, says this Show is aimed at “cowboy entertainers wanting to break into the Cowboy Poetry Gathering circuit.” Kinford went on to say, “These entertainers will be competing for featured entertainer gigs at several different gatherings, such as Cowboy Symposium at Ruidoso, NM, Hatch Chili Festival in Hatch, NM, and the Fort Worth Stock Show’s Campfire Tales.”
Entertainers will be performing free show between 11:30 a.m and 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday evening, there will be a dinner show catered by Shanna Roberts, of Van Horn. Cost for this dinner show will be $20.
Featured performers for the show include Buck Helton, Slim Farnsworth, David McBroom, Phil “Tumbleweed” Crawford and the Prairie Moon Band.
The Saturday night finals show will be made up of the best performers picked by judges during the free day sessions.
Tickets for the Saturday evening show will be $10.
Tickets for both performances are on sale at the Van Horn Convention Center, (432) 283-2682. For additional information, please go to the Gathering website: www.texascrossroadscowboypoetry.org.

I hope many of you Eagle Basketball fans will be able to make the trip to Odessa Friday for the area playoff game. And as Brandon Onate said in his Letter to the Editor - wear RED!
Congratulations to the team for being District Champs. You make us proud and we know you’ll give it all you have on Friday. Good Luck!

Another VHHS graduate from the past has made the news. Back in 1991, we had a story about Ronald Holmes becoming the head basketball coach at McMurry. Well, he has now moved up to AD at that university, after a coaching record there of 324-172. His teams have won five conference championships and at least a share of six American Southwest Conference West Division championships. He was a 1977 McMurry graduate, where he played basketball. With nearly two decades of service, Homes said the move was a natural one for him.
Ronald is a 1973 graduate of Van Horn High School, where he played on Coach John Curry’s State Champion Basketball team, as well as the award-winning ‘Best in Texas’ band under Ralph Zamarrippa.
Perhaps those experiences in Van Horn High School gave him that drive to be a winning coach. Congratulations to him, and thanks for making your hometown proud.

My daffodils are poking through the ground and yesterday’s temperature got up to 85! Can we dare hope that Spring is here. The answer is probably NO, unfortunately, because we know that we have to get all the way through March before the danger of a late freeze is over. But we can sure enjoy these nice days as we get them and know that Spring is really just around the corner. Actually did we even have a winter? Yes, the nights were cold but I can’t remember any bitterly cold days. And that’s okay with me, but some winter moisture would sure have been nice.

You gotta love being a Texan! Here’s some things that Jeff Foxworthy had to say about ‘us’.........
* If someone in a Lowe’s store offers you assistance and they don’t work there, you may live in Texas ;
* If you’ve worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you may live in Texas ;
* If you’ve had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you may live in Texas ;
* If ‘Vacation’ means going anywhere south of Dallas for the weekend, you may live in Texas ; * If you measure distance in hours, you may live in Texas ;
* If you know several people who have hit a deer more than once, you may live in Texas ;
* If you install security lights on your house and garage, but leave both unlocked, you may live in Texas ;
* If you carry jumper cables in your car and your wife knows how to use them, you may live in Texas;
* If the speed limit on the highway is 55 mph — you’re going 80 and everybody’s passing you, you may live in Texas ;
* If you find 60 degrees ‘a little chilly,’ you may live in Texas ;
* If you actually understand these jokes, and share them with all your Texas friends, you definitely live in Texas!
