2008 drier than normal, temps were average

2008 came to a close at midnight last night and there are some interesting things about the year as far as our weather is concerned.
2008 was a considerably drier year than average. Van Horn average rainfall amounts to about 9.5” but in 2008 we recorded only 6.88”. That makes 2008 drier than average by some 2.62”
Temperatures, however, seemed to be about normal. The average highs and lows by month are shown below:

Van Horn’s mean high temperature in 2008 was 77.76 and the mean low temperature in 2008 was 46.65.
The last freeze for last winter occurred on March 20, 2008. The first freeze for this winter season occurred on November 7, 2008.
And, in the month of June, Van Horn recorded 10 days where the temperature hit the century mark or higher.
The winners of the Town’s Residential Christmas Decorating Contest told
Brenda Hinojos of Van Horn’s Convention and Visitors Bureau announced the winners of this year’s Residential Christmas Decorating Contest this week.
The winners, and their cash prizes are as follows:
1st Place went to Ruben Florez who resides at 905 Firebush Street. He received prize money totaling $200 donated by the Town of Van Horn.
2nd Place went to Sharon Behnke who resides at 1105 Fall Street. She received prize money totaling $150 donated by the Town of Van Horn.
3rd Place went to Carmen and Cornelio Garibay who reside at 1109 Gramma Street. They received prize money totaling $100 donated by the Town of Van Horn.
And, 4th Place went to Luis Navarrette who resides at 206 W. 5th Street. He received prize money totaling $50 donated by the Town of Van Horn.
Hinojos was careful to thank the judges for judging all the entries and she also thanked everyone in the community who decorated their homes for the Christmas season.

January 3rd - The Van Horn Eagle JV girls and boys basketball teams are slated to play Ft. Davis today in Ft. Davis.
January 4th - Attend the church of your choice.
January 5th - Nothing scheduled at press time.
January 6th - Members of the Van Horn Rotary Club are slated to meet today at noon at Chuy’s Restaurant. The Van Horn Eagle varsity girls and boys basketball teams are scheduled to play Dell City today in Dell City beginning at 6 p.m. The Van Horn City Council will meet tonight at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
