As you read in the feature story on our Community Shelter in last week’s Advocate, the Shelter is under new management. Things are going to be much different there now and they need the support of the citizens, churches, businesses and organizations to make it what it needs to be. It is a service that is definitely needed in our community, so won’t you consider filling out the form located in this issue of the Advocate (on page 4) which allows the Town of Van Horn to add a small amount of .99 cents to your utility bill to go to supporting the Shelter. Just .99 cents a month - what a small amount, but when put with many other .99 cents it would go a long way to help pay the expenses of the shelter each month.
The new management and new board realize that they have to overcome a bad reputation left from previous management and situations there, but they’ll be working hard to earn your trust again. If you, as businesses, organizations or individually, have supported the Shelter in the past, but have lost trust in it, please give them another chance to show that it will be much different now. The King’s are very capable and enthused to make it what it should be for our town in helping those who need shelter or food. Won’t you open your hearts, so that they can keep the doors at the Shelter open?

It seems that it gets harder and harder each year to keep the true spirit and meaning of Christmas in our celebrations. One good way, especially with children, is through good books. In Dr. David Jeremiah’s monthly devotional magazine this month, he offers this list of 10 terrific read-aloud Christmas books and his ‘why read’ explanation:
1. The Birthday of a King - best preschool retelling of Christ’s birth.
2. The Story of the Other Wiseman - more than any other we’ve read, this story connects Christmas to Easter.
3. The Birds’ Christmas Carol - Expose your children to a more classic, sentimental writing style.
4. What Nick and Holly Found in Grandpa’s Attic - Not for its memorable prose, but for its clear teaching about the Savior. (Illustrations are wonderful).
5. The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey - Let your children see how an eager 7-year old boy transformed the life of a Scroogelike recluse.
6. One Wintry Night - Puts Christ’s birth clearly in perspective as part of the larger, single story of the Bible.
7. Jotham’s Journey: A Storybook for Advent - Not only a spellbinding adventure story, but a complete celebration of Advent, including post reading thoughts and discussion starters.
8. The Last Straw - A memorable story that teaches the beauty of giving. Also a good idea for a new family tradition!
9. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever - Funny, well-written and enjoyable for all ages.
10. Merry Christmas, Amelia Bedelia - No spiritual message, no underlying themes, just hysterical fun!
Reading both fun and meaningful Christmas stories to your kids will enrich your celebration and draw your family closer together. Happy reading!

I just have to share this wonderful story which a good friend emailed me. We can’t ever emphasize too much what our Veterans do for us. It’s a true story and can be verified at www.snopes.
A Lesson That Should Be Taught In All Schools
This is a great lesson and so well presented -
Back in September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha
Cothren, a social studies school teacher at Robinson High
School in Little Rock, did something not to be forgotten.
On the first day of school, with the permission of the school
superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks out of her classroom. When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks.
Looking around, confused, they asked, ‘Ms. Cothren, where’re our desks?’
She replied, ‘You can’t have a desk until you tell me what you have done to earn the right to sit at a desk.’
They thought, ‘Well, maybe it’s our grades.’
‘No,’ she said.
‘Maybe it’s our behavior.’ She told them, ‘No, it’s not
even your behavior.
And so, they came and went, the first period, second period, third period. Still no desks in the classroom.
By early afternoon television news crews had started
gathering in Ms. Cothren’s classroom to report about this
crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of her room.
The final period of the day came and as the puzzled
students found seats on the floor of the deskless classroom.
Martha Cothren said, ‘Throughout the day no one has been able to tell me just what he or she has done to
earn the right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in
this classroom. Now I am going to tell you.’
At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door
>of her classroom and opened it.
Twenty-seven (27) U.S. Veterans, all in uniforms, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk.
The Vets began placing the school desks in rows, and
then they would walk over and stand alongside the wall.
By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those
desks had been earned.
Martha said, ‘You didn’t earn the right to sit at these desks.
These heroes did it for you. They placed the desks here for
you . Now, it’s up to you to sit in them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be good students, to be good citizens. They paid the price so that you could have the
freedom to get an education. Don’t ever forget it.’
