The Van Horn Lady Eagle volleyball team earned the distinction of being Bi-District Camps Tuesday evening.
The girls traveled to Alpine to battle the Balmorhea Bears in the bi-district match-up.
The Lady Eagles played 5 long games to win the match and return to Van Horn with the Bi-District trophy.
The Lady Eagles took the court at Gallego Center and won the fist game 25 to 23 after being down almost 10 points. In the last and deciding game, the Lady Eagles won 15 to 8.
Coach Melinda Flores commented, “Our nervousness and jitters showed the whole time, but when it was time to come through and put the match away, they came through.”
Flores went on to say, “Once they took the lead in the final game of the match, they never looked back and achieved the desired result....Bi-District Champs!”
The Lady Eagles will play the Area round tonight against Sterling City. Sterling City are champs of their district and “we are expecting to play a strong pass, setting, hitting team that is a lot faster,” noted Flores.
Game time has been set for 7 p.m. in the Monahans Lobo gymnasium tonight. Congratulations and good luck tonight!

Now I know you are all thinking that I have a doom and gloom attitude this morning because it’s no secret to our readers how Larry and I stood on the election. No, the man of our choice is not going to be our next leader. But we also love this country and believe that one of the things that has made it a strong nation for some 230 years is the election process. That process once again worked itself out and Obama came out on top. Now we just hope and trust that he will be a good President and that he will be able to make us a strong and ‘United’ States of America. I pray that he and his staff and cabinet will look to God for their wisdom to guide this country. I pray that God’s providence and blessings will continue to be on our nation, for that alone is what will keep it the greatest nation in the world.

I appreciate the school for allowing our young students to have the experience of knowing what an election is all about. When I went up to the elementary the take a picture of their ‘election judges’, I was so impressed with the seriousness that those children had as they listened to Municipal Court Judge Ben Flanagan talk to them about the responsibility of their job before he swore them in.
I heard that the election in both junior high and elementary was conducted in the same serious attitude. They went through the registration process and then the voting process. They know now that there are specific rules that are followed in an election. The key to our country’s future is instilling into our children that our constitution is the thing that rules this country, and that includes the way we elect our leaders.
Thank you, school district teachers and administration, for still teaching patriotism and pride in country to these young minds.

Another way our school district is teaching this is through the Veterans Day program each year. In recognizing our veterans, they learn of, and remember the sacrifice that has been paid for our freedoms. Please don’t ever stop doing this. We must never forget to honor those who have been willing to serve our country, even in war if necessary.
So please veterans and families of veterans - get those pictures up to the high school by Friday so they can be included on a power point presentation at the program on Tuesday. This is the first time this has been done and I can’t wait to see it. They want to be sure and return these pictures so they are asking you to also bring an addressed envelope for returning them.
My thanks to all our Veterans for your service to our country. You are special in my book! The following is for you..........
“A Veteran is someone who, at one point in his life wrote a blank check, made payable to ‘The United States of America’ for amount of ‘up to and including my life’.
That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who have no understanding of that.

Congratulations to our Lady Eagles Volleyball team. We are so proud of the winning season you are having. Good Luck at the Area competition tonight! We know you’ll give it all you have. I’m sure a large group of Van Horn fans will be there to support you.

Food for Thought...... If you are depressed about something, don’t set down because the devil will come and sit in your lap.
