Stock Show auction nets $35,225 for youth

Van Horn’s 59th Annual Culberson County Livestock Show was held here last weekend and when the auction sale was over, some $35,225 had been raised for local 4-H youth.
Ricky Shelley had the grand champion steer which at the auction was bought by Blue Quail Oil & Gas Consulting & Leasing Services and George Snyder.
The grand champion lamb was shown by Chad Engle and his lamb was purchased by the Lado Ranch.
Desirae Brewster showed the grand champion swine, which at auction was purchased by Steve and Susan Howard.
The grand champion goat was shown by Chad Engle as well, and it was purchased at auction by Fabens Oil Company and Rio Grande Classic.
This year’s show was dedicated to Jim Engle for his years of support and work on behalf of local 4-H youth.
Following the bar-b-q dinner, Lane Brewster announced the various award winners at this year’s show.
Ricky Shelley won the Grand Champion Steer buckle donated by Woodward Livestock.
Jackson Watley won the Grand Champion Heifer buckle donated by Ray and Carole Fitzgerald.
The Grand Champion Swine buckle, donated by Watley Services, went to Desirae Brewster.
Chad Engle won the Grand Champion Goat buckle which was donated by Button and Margie Garlick.
Chad Engle also won the Grand Champion Lamb buckle, donated by Ernie Carrillo.
K’Cee Romero won the Grand Champion Market Rabbit buckle which was donated by John and Martha Conoly.
The Grand Champion Fryer Rabbit buckle, donated by Kyle and Nina Brookshier, went to Colin Brewster.
Tyler Brewster won the Grand Champion Broiler buckle which was donated by the Van Horn K.O.A.
Colin Brewster won the Junior Cattle Showmanship buckle donated by Badillo Construction.
Tyler Brewster won the Senior Cattle Showmanship buckle, donated by Connel Oil Company.
Tyler Brewster also won the Junior Swine Showmanship buckle which was donated by 4-R Spice.
The Senior Swine Showmanship buckle, donated by West Texas Express, went to Junior Carmona.
Ricky Shelley won the Junior Goat Showmanship buckle which was donated by Van Horn Auto Supply.
The Senior Goat Showmanship buckle, donated by Van Horn State Bank, went to Desirae Brewster.
Tyler Brewster won the Junior Lamb Showmanship buckle, donated by SKIDS Farm.
Chad Engle won the Senior Lamb Showmanship buckle which was donated by PCSI-Austin.
K’Cee Romero won the Junior Rabbit Showmanship buckle, donated by A & A Repair.
The Senior Rabbit Showmanship buckle, donated by Rolan and Susan Brewster, went to K’Lee Romero.
The Junior Broiler Showmanship buckle, which was donated by Ismael Garcia, went to Colin Brewster.
Tyler Brewster won the Senior Broiler Showmanship buckle donated by Lane and Beth Brewster.
Named as this year’s Rookie of the Year was Jay Torres. He received a buckle donated by the U.S. Border Patrol.
This year’s 4-H Sweetheart was Desirae Brewster. She received a buckle donated by Rio Grande Electric Cooperative.
Named as Livestock Princess was K’Cee Romero. She received a buckle donated by Dairy Queen. Named as Livestock Queen was her sister, K’Lee Romero. She received a buckle donated by County Judge Manuel Molinar.
And, named as the All Around Showman was Tyler Brewster. He received a buckle donated by David and Cindy Ramirez.
The award for Senior Record Book went to Desirae Brewster, while the award for Junior Record Book went to Tyler Brewster. And, the Herdsman Award went to Danielle Watley. These three awards were gift certificates at Wal-Mart.
The Livestock Show Association also presented plaques to Alan Watley and Susie Hinojos for their service to the show and Association. And, they presented Rolan Brewster with a lettered coat.
This year’s show judges were Don Kelso, of Sanderson. He judged rabbits and poultry. All the livestock was judged by Jerry Franklin of Tucumcari, New Mexico.
Show auctioneers were Bucky Etheridge and Marcus Etheridge.
The bar-b-q was cooked by Efrain Hinojos and crew from the Van Horn Volunteer Fire Department.
And, the Livestock Show executive committee members were Rolan Brewster, Kyle Koch, Pam Watley, and Susie Hinojos.
Local man mauled by dogs Sunday morning
A local man walking to work early Sunday morning never made it to work. Instead, he was mauled by attacking dogs in the vicinity of the Knights Inn Motel.
Culberson Hospital’s EMS found 61 year-old Noe Carrillo lying on the cold asphalt bleeding profusely from multiple dog bites.
According the Sheriff Oscar Carrillo, “The 9-1-1 caller said he witnessed the pack of dogs mauling the defenseless pedestrian when he ran to aid chasing the dogs across the street to the Goodyear building owned by Ike Vorheis.”
Sheriff Carrillo told the Advocate that he summoned the assistance of the Town of Van Horn who located and are currently holding the dogs while the investigation continues.
Sheriff Carrillo also noted, “due to the numerous lacerations, Carrillo was transported to El Paso’s Thomason General Hospital where he was in surgery for hours as doctors worked to close over 100 bites ranging in size and depth located all over his body.”
