Jack Stallings, of the El Paso office of the Texas Department of Agriculture was in town Tuesday along with a bunch of folks from the area to host a ‘Rural Economic Development Roundtable’ for folks here in Van Horn.
Stallings had folks from the Farm Service Agency office in Ft. Stockton, the Rural Economic Development Director for the USDA’s office in Ft Stockton, a Go Texan marketing lady from the El Paso office of the TDA, a representative of the Small Business Development Center at El Paso Community College, and a representative of the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) El Paso office.
Some 17 local folks were in attendance at this roundtable, hoping to glean information concerning how to start up a local business or how to expand upon what they already had.
Each of the presenters told the audience about grants and loans that are available under their various programs and what the criteria were in order to qualify.
Additionally, they were told about how to develop a business plan and how to present that plan, along with financials, to a local bank to start the SBA loan process.
Realistically, start up businesses shoud look to the SBA because they offer longer terms, and lower interest rates. SBA loans, for the most part, would be loans through a local bank but with an SBA guarantee.
Locals were told that they should first of all see a counselor at the Sul Ross office of the Small Business Developement Center who would assist them in developing a business plan, followed by the appropriate loan documents for presentation to a bank.
Following a question and answer session, the meeting terminated with locals feeling positive and upbeat about what is availble to them to start or expand a business.
