Van Horn’s University Interscholastic League (UIL) competitors traveled to McCamey last Saturday to compete in the District UIL Meet.
According to Bo Buchhorn, one of the sponsors, “There were eleven teams at the district UIL Meet and the competition was pretty tough.”
Van Horn competitors simply were outclassed in all areas of the competition save for the calculator team. And the calculator team shined again. In fact, for the 13th straight time, the calculator team won the District UIL Meet.
Mr. Buchhorn reported the following results for the number sense and calculator competitors:
Number Sense: Julia Baeza took 6th Place in the competition.
Calculator: Julio Baeza took 3rd Place; Rutesh Bhakta took 4th Place; Rebecca Mendias took 5th Place; and Jackie Grado and Ram Patel tied for 6th Place.
As a result, the calculator team finished the competition in 1st Place for the 13th year on a row.

There’s a couple of dates that you need to mark on your calendars and be thinking about. The first is April 10th. That’s the date set by the City for the big push to clean up our town. Be looking around your homes and businesses for unsightly ‘junk’ and plan on getting rid of it. Special previsions are being offered by the City to make it easier to dispose of large items in the hopes that everyone will get involved in making our town look a whole lot better. Look for more information in next week’s Advocate about this. Think what a difference it would make if every home and business takes this serious!
The other event is the CCVB-sponsored Building Bridges Art Show April 15-17. We have some very talented people in Van Horn so this is your opportunity to ‘show off’ your artistic ability. I just visited with a lady this morning who is planning on entering some of her lovely paintings. I wasn’t even aware that she was an artist. Look for a feature story about her in next week’s Advocate as well, and her very generous plans for the money she makes from the sale of her paintings at the Art Show.

Congratulations to our High School Calculator Team, who just took 1st place at the District competition this week. Now the amazing thing about this is that it’s the 13th consecutive 1st place trophy won by our Calculator teams, and all under the sponsorship of Bo Buchhorn. What’s your secret Mr. Buchhorn.
The team will be competing at the Regional Meet soon. And, yes, as before their arch rival will be the team from Plains, coached by Brad Friesen, one of Mr. Buchhorn’s students years ago at VHHS, and who Mr. B takes great pleasure in beating. Good Luck to our team at Regionals!

Is it really already Easter? Weren’t we just getting Christmas decorations put up? It does come fast when we have one of those early-in-the-year Easters. Besides Thanksgiving, Easter is my favorite time. Did you hear in the news that some state is trying to re-name Good Friday to ‘Celebration of Spring’ – or some dumb thing like that. How sad. Good Friday is the day we observe the death on a cross of Jesus Christ for the sacrifice for our sins. Easter Sunday is when he broke the power of death by His Resurrection. Hallelujah! I feel sad for anyone who has not experienced the joy of this realization in their heart.
Do you ever wonder about those people actually involved in the events that took place during Holy Week. There were people from all walks of life. The movie “The Passion of Christ” (which I hope you all saw) gave us a close-up look at many of them.
The daily devotions that Larry and I are reading this Holy Week (Daily Guideposts), takes a few of them and puts in their own words what they might have been experiencing. Here is John, one of Jesus’ disciples....
“ As soon as they seized the Master in Gethsemane, we fled, running into the night like fugitives. Peter, Thomas, James, all of us crouched in the Upper Room, where we had celebrated Passover. The next morning, though, I knew we had to go to him. “Look, I’m scared too,” I said. “But we can can’t forsake him!” But they all refused, even Peter, and I made my way through the city alone, wanting nothing more to do with the cowardly lot.
When I arrived at Calvary, they were already pounding the nails. I was like a nightmare. Why, I kept asking. Why is this happening?
They hoisted the cross upright. He was all covered with blood, as if he’d been beaten. Some sort of grotesque crown had been pressed onto his head. Jeers broke out. “Stop it!” I yelled angrily at the crowd. Three soldiers squatted at his feet and rolled dice. I clenched y fists. Which was worse, to taunt him or ignore him?
What had he ever done to deserve this? Wherever he went he had preached nothing but love! And suddenly, I was seized by an amazing thought. It was love that had nailed him there. Love was the reason behind it all. He had given himself to die out of love.
I gazed up at the Master, tears blurring my eyes. It was coming back to me….the words he had spoken as we shared the Passover meal. “Love one another, as I have loved you,” he’d said. Standing by the cross, I fixed my heart upon the taunting crowd and the dice-rolling soldiers and the disciples still crouched in hiding. Because of the Master I would love them. Because of Him.

My Prayer for the Week… Oh Master, teach us to love as you did…even when it is difficult.
