The Van Horn Eagle math, number sense and calculator team traveled to Canutillo last weekend to take part in the annual Canutillo Math Meet. The meet featured 22 schools and 20 of them were 4A or 5A schools.
The Eagle team, coached by B.O. Buchhorn took 2nd Place overall at the meet. Not bad for a 1A school!
Eagle scores from the meet are as follows:
Math: 9th Grade: Imisha Bhakta, 8th; and Savannah Corralez, 9th.
Calculator: 9th Grade - Imisha Bhakta, 5th; 10th Grade - Jackie Grado, 2nd; 12th Grade - Julio Baeza, 3rd; Rutesh Bhakta, 6th; and Rebecca Mendias, 8th.
The Eagle calculator team took 2nd as well based on their 4 best scores. The four best scores were turned in by Julio Baeza, Rutesh Bhakta; Jackie Grado and Rebecca Mendias.
Taking 1st Place at the meet were the following schools: Number Sense - Canutillo; Math - Coronado; and Calculator - Jefferson/Silva.
Congratulations!

This was one of those weeks when many in Van Horn, including myself, were asking, “Why God? Why did such a young man have to die? A young man who was so happy that he had a positive influence on all those around him and who inspired many to give their very best as we watched him on the track running for that finish line and giving it his upmost.
John Means lost his battle with cancer on Monday, but even in that race he never lost his positive attitude. Perhaps his ‘secret’, if you want to call it that, was his strong faith in Jesus Christ. One of my remembrances of John was his testimony which was given at church around the time of his graduation from high school. He was indeed a very special young man.

Now how’s this for positive thinking. Rene Ramirez was in the store this morning and I overheard his conversation with another customer about taking some time off. He said he had already asked for vacation time during this year’s State Track Meet. You see, Rene’s son, Ricky, is on the Relay Team which brought home a 3rd place from State last June in the 400 Meter Relay. Obviously, they are planning on returning again this year!
So you see, it’s always a good thing to plan ahead – and to think positively!

Another one of our old eye-sores of a building has had a unique-looking temporary face lift. If you haven’t seen the old Frank’s Grocery Store lately, drive by and take a look. I especially like the big ‘Welcome to Van Horn’ sign on the south side of the building.
Of course someday we hope to see businesses in many of our old buildings. But for now the ‘Old West’ façade paintings add a touch of our western heritage and cover up a multitude of ugliness.

The January 7, 2010 issue of the Advocate had something very important on the front page that probably went totally unnoticed. But that’s okay, just look at this issue up at the top, under the name “Van Horn Advocate” and just next to the little box that says “Serving Van Horn & Culberson County Since 1910” (that’s a clue). Under the date it says Volume 100, Number 4. Yes, the Advocate is 100 YEARS OLD!
Now it is something of a miracle that this small town has managed to keep a weekly newspaper for 100 years. So many small-town papers have not made it this long, or have been taken in by larger newspaper publishers in nearby towns. Believe me, there have been several times in the last 34 years that Larry and I have been publishing the Advocate that we wondered how much longer we would be able to keep it going. Having another business with it was the only way it would survive those months when the advertising wasn’t hardly enough to pay even the printing bill, much less other expenses or a little bit for us.
Some encouraging comments lately sure help us keep going, and they are very much appreciated. I must admit though, that those comments are from our out-of-town subscribers that have other weekly newspapers to compare the Advocate with. The only time that we even have a hint that locals care is the comments Larry gets when he is a little late getting it out on Thursday morning.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, VAN HORN ADVOCATE!
