Alternative energy developer excited about power potential
Van Horn city council members met Tuesday evening and heard an update on the plans of Aero Alternative Industries as they relate to Van Horn.
Darlene Elder, of Sierra Blanca, who heads up Aero Alternative, has plans to construct a wind power, solar power, ‘green’ electrical generating facility on land some 35 miles northeast of Van Horn. She says the site has been studied and will make an excellent wind and solar energy producing area.
Elder, fresh from meetings in El Paso on all types of ‘green’ energy, introduced several potential investors in her project and each spoke very highly of the initital proposal.
Elder told the Advocate, “We’re aware of the need to construct a 30 + mile transmission line to bring the power to Van Horn and it is in the works.” The project, which aims at bringing electrical power to Van Horn, is still in it’s infancy but “it’s picking up steam on a daily basis,” according to Elder.
“It will be good for the area as there will ultimately be construction jobs while the system is being built,” noted Elder.
Before she left Elder told council, “Thanks you for supporting this project. I have a sample Power Puchase Agreement (PPA) which you previously approved and will leave it for your signature.”
Council members, acknowledged that the Main Street Advisory Board does not now exist because Van Horn is no longer a Main Street town. They told Lisa Cottrell, the chairman of that board, that they would approve awarding $5,000 from the Main Street fund balance so that she could help get the Chamber of Commerce going again.
Council had suggested at an earlier meeting that the Main Street Advisory Board compose the Chamber of Commerce board and Cottrell is attempting to get that pulled off. An organizational meeting has been planned for January 28th to get things resolved.
And, while council was talking about Main Street monies, they had some $44,000, council members approved a request from Alderwoman Gilda Morales to transfer $15,000 of that money to the Van Horn Economic Development Corporation (VHEDC) to assist them with their efforts around town.
An aside, Alderwoman Morales reported that the VHEDC had sold the former Willis Buidling to a man from Louisiana. She further reported on progress toward finding someone to put a business in where the Dollar Store now is when it leaves there next month.
With respect to other agenda items considered by council, the following actions were taken:
* They heard Adrian Norman voice concerns residents have over by the Pilot Truck Stop. There are still issues with dust, trash and violations of no parking signs. One option discussed was placing larger signs in the area, as well as cement barricades. Mayor Flanagan said that he would talk to Pilot folks here and in their main office in Knoxville.
* Council, after learning that a borrowed big screen TV at the golf course had been returned to it’s owner, approved up to $1500.00 for the purchase of a new one.
* Council members unanimously approved City Ordinance 10-01-339 which addresses Regulation of Sexual Offenders within the city limits. The sheriff’s office will be alerted.
* Council learned that the city has been tentatively approved for a $432,000 HOME Program grant to rebuild 5 homes in Van Horn. The final award is expected sometime on the 20th or 21st of Janaury.
* Following a behind-closed-doors executive session, council members approved allowing Raul Rodriguez to take unused vacation from 2008.
