The filing deadline has come and passed for political hopefuls wanting to toss their hats in the ring for the March 2nd Primary Elections.
Here in Culberson County, Democratic Party Chairman Robert Morales (we were incorrect last week when we said Yolanda Urias was the chairman) reports that candidates have filed for the following offices:
In the race for Culberson County Judge, incumbant Manuel “Manny” Molinar has filed for reelection. He will be challenged by Carlos Urias.
In the race for Culberson County Treasurer, incumbant Susie Hinojos has filed for reelection. She does not have an opponent.
In the race for District and County Clerk, incumbant Linda McDonald is running unopposed for reelection.
In the contest for Culberson County Commissioner, Precinct 2, incumbant Duane “Toto” Corrales has filed for reelection. In this race, he will be challenged by A.P. Flores, Jr. and Rolando Gomez.
Over in Precinct 4, the Culberson County Commissioners race has incumbant Adrian Julio Norman running for reelection. He will be challenged in the race by Raul Rodriguez.
In the race for Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1, incumbant Oscar Espinoza, Sr. is not running. The candidates for this office are Jose Luis “Joe” Aguilar and Rita H. Carrasco.
No one filed for the office of Justice of the Peace, Precinct 2.
Incumbant Jo Kincaid has filed for reelection to the Justice of the Peace, Precinct 3 post. She has no challengers.
In the contest for Justice of the Peace, Precinct 4, incumbant Betty Velez is seeking reelection. She is being challenged for this post by Linda M. Vasquez.
In the race for Constable, Precinct 2, Thomas “Tom” Burns, who is the appointed constable, is running unopposed.
In the contest for Constable, Precinct 4, Eric Ramirez is running unopposed.
And, to make the coming election cycle real interesting, Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1 Oscar Espinoza, Sr. has filed for County Judge as an independent candidate. As such, he will face whoever wins the primary election in the November General Election.
The ballot is set. Let the campaigning begin!

By the time you are reading this we are probably experiencing yet another winter blast. Okay, what is the deal here. This is West Texas. The only positive thing out of all these low temperatures at night is that maybe all the bugs that plaque my yard each summer may be gone. But one can’t help but wonder, given our low temperatures, and nationwide as well, why we are supposed to buy into this ‘global warming’ idea. It is amazing that someone like Al Gore can make millions on a fabricated idea.
This morning I heard that back in 1922 there was concern that the glaciers were melting. But guess what, they came back. Are we a nation of stupid people that just believes anything? It seems to me that it is obvious that ‘Mother Nature’ does go through changes, ever so small when you see the big picture, but over many, many years nothing really drastically changes. So why are we being fed a bunch of nonsense and being made to believe that if we don’t do something like Cap & Trade that we are going to destroy our planet. Unfortunately it’s all a part of that idea of ‘global thinking’ that the far left would like us to fall into. I fear it is total control over us that is really their goal.
And while I’m on my high horse, I might as well comment on health care. I just finished reading quite a lengthy reply to one of my many emails to Congressman Rodriguez. I do appreciate him acknowledging my correspondence with him, and trying to answer my many concerns about this health care bill. However, I just cannot be convinced that we need this huge costly new government-controlled bureaucracy. Yes, there are problems with our health care, and I am not some cold-hearted person that does not feel that everyone should have health care if they need it. I just can’t understand why we can’t concentrate on those areas that need changing without the government taking over. Here again, could it be more control over us that is the real goal?
The thing I have a really hard time believing is that much of this is going to be paid for by making Medicare and Medicaid more efficient and saving millions of dollars there to help pay for this. I’m sorry, but when did we ever see our federal government become more efficient, conservative and cost-cutting.
Another very disgusting thing about this is the way they are holding behind-closed-doors sessions to get this done. So much for the promise of transparency of this administration.
So, now is the time for you to contact Congressman Rodriguez if you, too, have some unanswered questions about this, or would like to ask him to reconsider his support of this bill. I find it hard to believe that the majority of his constituents are for this, considering that a majority of the nation is against it. Or is he just being loyal to his party’s leadership? He works for us. Not Pelosi, Reid, or Obama. He may not choose to listen to the majority of his constituents now, but he will have no choice in November.

In case you have not heard, there is a group of Junior High School students, led by Ms. Anna Luna, who are raising money to go to Washington, D.C. This program is a once in a lifetime opportunity to discover American history first-hand and to fully grasp the meaning of the lessons taught in the classroom in a fun and interactive way. The trip will take place the second week of June 2010. They will be traveling with an accredited student travel organization, WorldStrides.
This 4-day trip costs $1744 per student. Local businesses, organizations and individuals are being asked to consider supporting these students through donations. Ms. Luna is committed to making this trip a reality to those students who wish to participate, and believes that a great way to assure years of success at home is by educating our children about the world around them.
You may contact Ms. Luna for additional information about this program by calling her at the school or via Email at aluna@ccaisd.net.

Van Horn never wastes much time jumping right in to big events in January and again this year we have the Health Fair and the Stock Show on consecutive weekends. The Health Fair, sponsored by our hospital is a great opportunity to focus on your health and fitness. I depend on it every year to make sure my blood sugar is not out of hand, since I have a history of diabetes in my family. There’s just a wealth of different information and testing that they do at this fair, so take advantage of it and go Saturday morning. They also give away a lot of nice door prizes so you just might be a winner in that way as well.
The Annual Livestock Show is the following weekend. You may be contacted to donate, or buy at the auction. If not, call someone and inquire how you might help our 4-H kids out.
There’s more information in this issue of the Advocate on both these events, so check it out.

Some good New Year ‘s ‘Food for Thought’………
* Happiness is a choice.
* It’s never too late to live happily ever after.
* Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle in their journey. Thank God and them for the opportunity to walk this leg of their journey with them.
* Success comes in cans – failure comes in can’ts.
* A day is never lost if a lesson is learned.
* A man’s life is always more forcible than his speech. If his life and his doctrines disagree, the mass of lookers-on will accept his practice and reject his preaching. (Charles Spurgeon)
