Former Van Horn man realizes a dream to make his own film

Giving the "Gift of Life" The Van Horn High School Student Council sponsored a Community Blood Drive last Thursday at the High School Auditorium. Over 40 pints of life-giving blood were collected during the drive. Pictured above are Marrissa Balcazar and Ram Marin who were among several other ‘first-timers’ from High School to give the gift of life.

Christopher Jones graduated from Van Horn High School and now lives in El Paso. The former Van Horn man has long had a dream to produce an independent feature film and that dream is about to be fulfilled.
Jones’ first independent feature film, entitled “Where One Stands” is set to premiere in El Paso on Saturday, November 10th, at 7:30 p.m. at Premiere Cinemas at Bassett Center.
Jones told the Advocate, “Movies have always been my dream, and now we are ready to show the world. It’s a no-budget production, meaning I work from home, however everyone included has put in 100%, and I feel this film has earned the right to be seen.”
Jones went on to state, “Van Horn was a big part of my production and the town was very supportive. We commuted several weekends, and we shot several locations including the Courthouse, the Milwhite factory, and the County Jail. Several local contributed to the film with food, housing, and even gave a few special appearances in the film. My daughter Lezlie is one on the main cast members.”
Jones concluded his remarks by stating, “I would like the town to know our story. The locations alone were a blessing, and the young talent there should be recognized and thanked. I’m hopeful that we can have a special screening in Van Horn and will let folks know if we can do that.”
Jones is the son of Abe and Delia Lincoln, formerly of Van Horn.

Each year our schools host a Veterans Day Program and in doing this they express the community’s appreciation to those who have served their country in various military branches of service. I really appreciate this commitment from them in order to keep us reminded, and particularly our children, of the sacrifices made for our freedoms. We must not forget, and even more important, we must continue to teach this to each generation.
The program will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 13th at 9:00 AM at the school auditorium. Veterans and everyone else may begin arriving at 8:30 to view the displays of pictures. A reception for the Veterans will be held following the program. If you know of a Veteran, please encourage them to attend.

It’s seems hard to believe but football season is drawing to a close when the Eagles will play their last game this Friday. It will be here at home and annually this last game is also Parents Night. So it will be a good time to go out and encourage coaches, players, band members, etc.
And if you haven’t had one of those Sausage/Tortilla wraps this will be your chance for that as well. The Seniors are selling them to help raise money, so help them out. When you smell them cooking, you’ll want one, I guarantee it.

From time to time, but not always, results of an election will signify that the voters have made a very clear statement. I think that happened with Tuesday’s school district rollback election. The election result was not about money. This town has never held back when it is about our children. In fact this town is extremely generous when it comes to anything having to do with our children. This election was about trust in our school board. I hope they will realize that they do answer to the public (at least one board member has been heard to say that he did not have to answer to ‘us’). Voters realize that decisions have been made that are not in the best interest of our schools. We now need to roll up our sleeves, as a community and as board members, and work together in the best interest of our children. There are some things broken in the system but we can fix them. Our agendas just have to be toward that goal and nothing else. If there are board members who are not willing to do that, they simply need to step down, so as not to hinder the process. There’s too much at stake here for our kids!

Old Geezers
‘Geezers’ (slang for an old man) are easy to spot at sporting events, during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner. Old Geezers remove their caps and stand at attention and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them. Old Geezers remember the Depression, World War II, Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Normandy, and Hitler. They remember VJ Day, the Korean War, The Cold War, the Moon Landings, and who got us into Vietnam.
If you bump into an Old Geezer on the sidewalk, he will apologize. If you pass an Old Geezer on the street, he will nod or tip his cap to a lady. Old Geezers trust strangers and are courtly to women. Old Geezers hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain the lady is on the inside for protection. Old Geezers get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and they don’t like any filth on TV or in movies or in e-mails.
Old Geezers have moral courage. They seldom brag unless it’s about their grandchildren. It’s the Old Geezers who know our great country is protected, not by politicians or police, but by the young men and women in our Armed Forces.
This country needs Old Geezers with their decent values. We need them now more than ever. Thank God for Old Geezers!

Three Things to Ponder:
1. Cows
2. The Constitution
3. The Ten Commandments
COWS - Does anyone find it amazing that our government can track a single cow born in Canada almost three years ago, right to the stall where she sleeps in the state of Washington? And they tracked her calves to their stalls. But they are unable to locate 11 million illegal aliens wandering around our country. Maybe we should give each of them a cow.
THE CONSTITUTION - They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq. Why don’t we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, it has worked for over 200 years, and we’re not using it anymore.
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS - The real reason that we can’t have the Ten Commandments posted in a courthouse is this: You cannot post “Thou Shalt Not Steal, Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery, and Thou Shall Not Lie” in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians. It creates a hostile work environment.
