Global warming did not impact Van Horn in 2009
|
|
A winter wonderland.... Occurred in Van Horn for the third time, in December, on Tuesday, December 29th. It was pretty, wet, and for the most part gone by December 30th. If you’re talking about “global warming,” you won’t want to be doing it in Van Horn. This year has certainly not been our “hottest!” See related story in this issue.

A lot is being said about “global warming” in the news media, but that sure has not impacted Van Horn, at least not in 2009.
2009 turned out to be an almost normal year in every respect here.
The coldest maximum temperature occured on December 4th when the thermometer only reached 32 degrees. The coldest low temperature was hit on January 14th when the temperature dropped to 14 degrees.
The hottest recorded temperature was reached on July 15th when the thermometer topped out at 102 degrees. In fact, we only had two days where the temperature hit or exceeded 100 degrees.
The last recorded freeze, last spring, was on March 29th and the first recorded freeze, this fall, was on October 29th.
Precipatation for the year totaled some 8.81 inches and most of that came in July (2.32”) and August (1.87”). And, we had three months where we dd not record a single drop of precipatation. Those months were February, April and September.
And, as far as the wet, white stuff goes, we had three episodes of snow, all of them occuring in December. On December 1st, we had 2.25 inches of the white stuff. And then on December 4th, we had 3.5 inches of snow. And the final episode occureed just this week when on December 29th, we had 2.00 inches of the white stuff.
For those who like averages, a normal year for an Horn has us receiving slightly over 9 inches of precipatation. Normally, we have at least 12 days where the temperature hits or exceeds the century mark.
Global warming in Van Horn.....not this year!
Trustees approve mission & vision statements
Trustees of Culberson County-Allamoore ISD met on December 14th with several items on their plate
First and foremost was to approve a mission statement for the district. That statement, as approved, is as follows: “At CCAISD students succeedd through learning.”
Following approval of the mission statement, trustees approved a vision statement for the district. That statement is as follows: “To prepare all students with the tools and skills needed to thrive in any endeavor.”
Trustees approved the Superintendent’s Evaluation Instrument and they agreed to meet again on January 7th to complete the evaluation of Superintendent Mancha. According to trustees, they each will do an individual evaluation and then come together to finalize the evaluation.
Trustees additionally reviewed the district’s Academic Excellence Indicator System report for the 2008-2009 school year. The report showed that the district was academically acceptable.
Before concluding the session, trustees learned that the district has curtailed spending in “function 36” (extra curricular activities, sports, band, UIL, graduation, salaries, stipends, etc.) from $457,695 in 2008-2009 to $365,234 for 2009-2010.
And, they approved purchase of a mobile laptop lab, with monies from the federal government stimulus program, amounting to $28,343.
