VHHS has great dual credit program
By Margie Martinez and Eleno Mendez

Van Horn High School in conjunction with El Paso Community College began the dual credit program in the spring of 2003. The dual credit program offers college courses to both juniors and seniors who qualify through the college placement test and/or TAKS scores. Students taking these courses receive both high school and college credits. The maximum number of college hours one can receive is 30 or 33 depending on what they qualify to take. One student, for the first time, graduated with 30 college hours last spring 2009. Students must be identified as a junior or senior in order to take these classes as per the college standards.
Courses are taught by certified college professors with a Masters degree in the subject they are teaching. The professors must be credentialed by EPCC in order to teach these courses. The courses are offered online and face to face by instructors at the high school. Van Horn High School offers face to face English classes instructed by Lois Flanagan who has taught courses for EPCC since 1991. She teaches English 1301, 1302, British Lit. 2322, 2323, and Technical Writing 2314. The online courses offered include history, government, sociology, psychology, criminal justice, medical vocabulary, economics, drama, art, education, and child development. As a new addition to the dual credit program, Mr. Rangel will begin teaching the history courses face to face this spring of 2010.
Van Horn High School begin the dual credit program in the spring of 2003 with 5 students. This past spring of 2009, 22 seniors, more than half the class, graduated with college hours. Our goal is to expand our program a little each year to offer our students as many opportunities as possible to get a jump start on their college careers. Any parent who is interested in this program may speak to the high school counselor, Sondra McCoy.
We want to encourage all parents to work with their students to take advantage of this opportunity. To find out more, parents may visit the EPCC website and read about the dual credit program.
On November 5, EPCC will be at VHHS to conduct the new student orientation for all juniors enrolled in dual credit classes. At this time EPCC will be enrolling sophomore students interested in dual credit for the following school year.
If parents have any questions, please call Sondra McCoy at 432-283-2245, ext. 1490.
