If you are reading this on Thursday morning or anytime before 4:00 PM on Thursday afternoon you still have time to go up to the High School Auditorium and donate blood. The Student Council sponsors a blood drive a couple of times of year, and always need the help of those who are willing to give that ‘gift of life’. It takes just less than an hour usually and could mean so much to someone. And who knows, it could be you needing that blood someday

Another opportunity to help out by volunteering is the Girl Scouts. They will be holding an organizational meeting tonight, Thursday the 24th, at the City Library at 5:30 p.m. I know your help would sure be appreciated so if you have questions call Grace at the City Utilities office.

There was a very important event in the Luna Family recently and somehow it escaped our attention. However, it still merits telling all their friends in case others missed it also. Heradio and Aurelia celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on September the 9th. Wow! That’s something to celebrate. They are one of my most favorite couples and I just couldn’t let it pass without extending a big CONGRATULATIONS! I hear Aurelia didn’t want a big deal made of it so there was a quite ceremony at the church with family, as they renewed their wedding vows. How special! Their loving bond to each other is so apparent, and a great example for all married couples to strive for.
Dale and Lou Evans also celebrated a very special occasion last Wednesday – their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations! Their family will be treating them to a trip to Houston complete with tickets to an Astros game. Hope you have many more years together.

The time we’ve been waiting for is here. We finally get the chance to see inside that beautiful ‘new’ Hotel El Capitan. They will hold an Open House next Thursday. See their ad in this issue and plan on attending the Open House and taking a look at this historic building that is a real asset to our town.
Just a reminder to those planning on attending the Jubilee next June. Our many hotel accommodations will fill up fast, particularly this historic hotel. In fact if you are ‘old’ enough, you remember when it was operating as a hotel. It would be a real treat to be able to stay there and reminisce on the ‘good ole days’ of Van Horn’s past.

The 50’s Drug Problems
I’ve read it in the papers
And I’ve heard it on the news
About America’s big drug problem
Running second, only to booze
Now I ain’t no country bumpkin
I’ve got a little smarts
Shucks, we had drug problems too
And back then it broke my heart
All week, Monday thru Friday
We were drug each day to school
To get all our book learning
So we would be nobody’s fool
We were drug to Church each Sunday
And on Wednesday and Sunday night
And we were drug out to the woodshed
If we didn’t act just right
We were drug out to the cotton patch
To pick two hundred pounds a day
Then drug back to the woodshed
If that wasn’t what it weighed
I remember sneaking off to the movie
I knew I wasn’t supposed to so
I parked my bike around in back
So mama wouldn’t know
I think my sister told on me
And I cried out loud in fear
As mama drug me out the door
Holding on to my right ear
So ‘drugs’ influenced out lives too
And I’m so glad it did
Too bad today’s drug problems
Aren’t like I had as a kid.
