About 100 persons attended the formal groundbreaking ceremony for the new addition to Culberson Hospital on Wednesday, September 2. Those present included the board members of the Culberson County Hospital District (District), representatives of Preferred Management, hospital medical staff, hospital employees, members of the project team and area residents.
The ceremony began with an invocation delivered by John Thomas, MD, a member of the medical staff at Culberson Hospital. Don Collins, chairman of the District, followed, thanking everyone present and all the residents of Culberson County for helping to make this momentous day possible.
Ladelle Bates, Culberson Hospital administrator, added her welcome to the crowd and then introduced many of the individuals in the audience. The president of Preferred Management, Andy Freeman, indicated how pleased he was to be a part of the team that is making a new health care facility for Culberson County a reality.
Conceptual drawings of the 13,500 square foot hospital addition and samples of the colors and finishes which will be used inside and outside the facility were on display during the ceremony. Refreshments were also provided, and everyone in attendance took home a Culberson Hospital first aid kit commemorating the day.
With colorful balloons and heavy construction equipment in the background, members of the District, representatives of Preferred and local medical and hospital staff put on hard hats and took turns shoveling the first official spades of dirt. However, work on the site, or the “horizontal construction” actually began about two weeks ago with the temporary relocation of electrical service, demolition of the old incinerator and maintenance shed and preparation of the site.
Bids on the “vertical construction” are scheduled for review by the District at the end of September. UEB Builders, Inc., the Scottsdale, Arizona based company that will be serving as the general contractor for the project, invited all area tradesmen, suppliers and subcontractors to attend a subcontractor’s fair on Tuesday, September 1, to learn about the project and opportunities to bid. Thirteen vendors attended including several local tradesmen.
Completion of the hospital addition, including a new inpatient unit for acute care and swing bed patients, an expanded emergency department and new imaging center is scheduled for August 2010. Renovation of the existing facility will begin after departments and patients are moved into the new addition.
